Curriculum policy is established by the Department of Education, the Superintendent of Schools in the Archdiocese of San Juan and the school. This curriculum is implemented by the school administration and the faculty. It centers on critical pedagogy. Teachers monitor the progress of each student by communicating with parents through parents conferences and trimester reports.
Curriculum PK-3
Students learn by doing; knowledge is by a hands-on experience. Knowledge is developed through the interaction of social, cultural and personality factors: To know, To learn, and To comprehend. At these levels we believe in "stages of development", not in the chronological age of the student. For us to be able to expose our students to meaningful or authentic experiences is a decisive victory in our curriculum. Our curriculum is also dynamic, flexible, and the student learns at his/her own stride.
Science
The science program emphasizes the development of the student=s love for life and concern about the environment. The students strive for discovering science in lab activities, constructing science projects, and enjoying field trips to increase academic achievements. Such experiences help the student to acquire an awareness of the real world and as a result he/ she becomes more respectful toward life and the environment.
Mathematics
In Math, the standard-based curriculum emphasizes the guidelines of the latest National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) in which we incorporate basic skills along with problem-solving and critical thinking. It is our goal not only to integrate Math through the content areas and Language Arts but to relate Math to our lives as functioning human beings.
In the senior year, the school gives the student a choice between General Math and Statistics, Preparatory Math, or Pre-calculus according to their career interests. The Preparatory Math and Pre-calculus courses follow the College Entrance Examination Board (C.E.E.B.) curriculum for Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses.
Language Arts
The Spanish and English programs focus on the Critical Pedagogy curriculum, which encourages critical thinking and the construction of knowledge in a meaningful environment. The language instruction is based on Christian values or the complete development of religious, ethical, and civic values. This integration is accomplished through exploratory talks and shared experiences with peers. In the senior year, the language department offers the Advanced Placement (A.P.) courses, in accordance with the College Board of Puerto Rico. We use a broad range of authors to reflect upon how other people affect our communicative interaction, thereby contributing to the essence of the Hispanic-American idiosyncrasy.
Religion
Religion is a very important part of our curriculum for our students, Pre-K through 12th. Our interactive religious education includes liturgical activities, daily masses, communion, retreats, and others. We teach our students how to be good Christians, every day a better. Also, we have a special program, called Community Service, in which the community and the students are integrated to give them a better understanding of social needs. Therefore, a total of 60 hours of community service is a requirement for seniors in order to obtain their high school diploma.
Social Studies
The Social Studies program focuses on the student=s ability to comprehend why we exist, think, feel, and relate to others. Both, in elementary and high school, the curriculum emphasizes the teaching of religious, ethical, and civic values. It promotes a critical reflection on the different cultures and our collective identity or blueprint that shape us as Puertoricans. The content of the program divides the study of human behavior into disciples like history and geography. The pedagogical method is student-centered, promoting the students' interest through authentic experiences and critical dialogue. It also allows the student to explore his/her thoughts.
Sports
Our athletic program believes in the progress of the student as an integral individual. By exercising a myriad of activities, we promote physical, cognitive, social, and affective development. Students are exposed and encouraged to participate in extracurricular activities in which they construct meaning from movement. Several sports, masculine and feminine, are offered throughout the academic year.
Complementary Subjects
Computer
The purpose of the program is to expose students to technology. During the first grades they use the computer and combine it into other subjects as well. In High School they learn spreadsheets, word processing and programming.
Art
All the students from preschool to seventh grade take Art classes every week. They develop their creativity by engaging in artistic activities. They participate in exhibitions in Puerto Rico and in the United States.
